3 / 4 / 5 band decoding — pF, nF, µF with tolerance and voltage.
Brown — Brown — Orange — Gold
🎨 Microcopy. Bumblebee and tropical fish are NOT standard color codes — they're ceramic disc capacitors with 2–3 paint dots. Use 'Special Markings' below if your cap has dots instead of rings. For 1 or 2 digit printed codes (no bands), read the value directly in pF.

| Color | Band 1 (digit) | Band 2 (digit) | Band 3 (mult) | Band 4 (tol) | Band 5 (V) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black | 0 | 0 | ×1 | — | — |
| Brown | 1 | 1 | ×10 | ±1% | 100V |
| Red | 2 | 2 | ×100 | ±2% | 200V |
| Orange | 3 | 3 | ×1000 | — | 300V |
| Yellow | 4 | 4 | ×10000 | — | 400V |
| Green | 5 | 5 | ×100000 | ±0.5% | 500V |
| Blue | 6 | 6 | ×1000000 | ±0.25% | 600V |
| Violet | 7 | 7 | — | ±0.1% | 700V |
| Gray | 8 | 8 | — | — | 800V |
| White | 9 | 9 | — | — | 900V |
| Gold | — | — | ×0.1 | ±5% | — |
| Silver | — | — | ×0.01 | ±10% | — |
Example: Brown-Brown-Orange-Gold = 11 nF ±5%
First ring Brown = 1, second ring Brown = 1, third ring Orange = ×1 000, fourth ring Gold = ±5%. Multiply: 11 × 1 000 pF = 11 000 pF = 11 nF. With ±5% tolerance, the actual value is guaranteed between 10.45 nF and 11.55 nF. This 4-band system is the most common color-coded capacitor you will encounter.
💡 Tip. If you have a printed 3-digit code instead of bands (e.g. 104), use the converter on the home page — 104 = 10 × 10⁴ pF = 100 nF ±10%. The color code system and printed 3-digit system decode to exactly the same value.
⚠️ Warning. Bumblebee caps have DOTs, not rings. The dots follow the same color-to-digit mapping but you need to know which dot is which — usually big dot = first digit, small dot = multiplier. This tool handles rings only.
❌ Don't mix up multiplier and tolerance bands. Gold and Silver appear in both — Gold on band 3 = ×0.1, Gold on band 4 = ±5%. If in doubt, check the order: multiplier is always the last digit-defining band, tolerance comes after.
Questions About Color Codes
How do I read capacitor color bands?▼
Read left to right like a resistor. The first two bands are digits, the third is a multiplier power of ten in picofarads, the optional fourth is tolerance, and the optional fifth is voltage. Example: Brown-Brown-Orange-Gold → 11 × 10³ pF = 11 nF ±5%.
What's the difference between 3-band, 4-band and 5-band systems?▼
3-band: two digits + multiplier — no tolerance, default ±20% (M). 4-band: two digits + multiplier + tolerance. 5-band: three digits + multiplier + tolerance + voltage rating. Most vintage disc and mica caps use 3 or 4 bands; some mil-spec parts use 5 bands.
Bumblebee and Tropical Fish — are they real color codes?▼
No. Bumblebee and tropical fish are ceramic disc capacitors with 2–3 paint dots, not rings. The dots follow the same color-to-value mapping but are not standard EIA banded codes. 'Bumblebee' caps typically have one black dot + one colored dot + a stripe — decode the dot colors as digits and the stripe as multiplier.
Gold and Silver — what do they mean?▼
Used only on the multiplier band (never on first or second digit band). Gold = × 0.1, Silver = × 0.01. So Red-Gold-Gold = 2 × 0.1 × 0.1 = 0.02 pF (unusual but possible). On the tolerance band, Gold = ±5%, Silver = ±10%.
Why don't most capacitors use color codes anymore?▼
Miniaturization. Modern ceramic chip capacitors (0402, 0603, 0805) are too small for color bands, so they use 3-digit print codes instead (473 = 47 × 10³ pF = 47 nF). Larger through-hole electrolytics and films print the full value in µF directly — no decoding needed.
What does the 5th band mean on a 5-band capacitor?▼
On a standard 5-band capacitor, the 5th band (after multiplier and tolerance) gives the rated working voltage in tens of volts. Brown = 100V, Red = 200V, Orange = 300V, and so on up to 900V for White. Pink and tint variations exist for 25V and 35V parts.
How do I decode a 1 or 2 digit printed capacitor?▼
Caps with 1 or 2 digits printed are read directly in pF — 22 = 22 pF, 100 = 100 pF. This is different from the 3-digit EIA code system. Check the body size: tiny 2-digit disc caps are usually under 100 pF.
Why does my color code decode not match the label?▼
Two common reasons. First, you might have a bumblebee or tropical fish cap (dots, not rings) — check the physical marking carefully. Second, some vintage mica caps put a temperature coefficient color after the tolerance band, not a voltage — decode that as a letter code (C, E, etc.) rather than voltage.
